Bellingham's Goals Can't Mask Madrid's Defensive Woes in 3-3 Draw
Real Madrid's title aspirations took a hit on Saturday as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Rayo Vallecano. Despite Jude Bellingham scoring for the fifth consecutive game, Madrid's defense was exposed, conceding three preventable goals.
The first half saw a disastrous start for the reigning champions, with Rayo scoring two identical goals in the 4th and 36th minutes. A combination of poor marking and a header across the goal from the fall post left Thibaut Courtois helpless.
Madrid responded quickly, however, with Federico Valverde scoring a stunning long-range goal and Bellingham equalizing with a header. Rodrygo put Madrid ahead early in the second half, but Rayo's Isi Palazon equalized with a well-taken goal.
Despite dominating possession, Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances. Vinicius Jr. came closest, but his shot was saved by the Rayo goalkeeper.
After the game, Madrid expressed their frustration with the referee, claiming that a penalty should have been awarded for a challenge on Vinicius in the second half. This is just the latest instance of Madrid criticizing refereeing decisions this season.
Carlo Ancelotti noted that Real Madrid began their match against Rayo Vallecano without several key players due to injuries, including Kylian MbappΓ©, Ferland Mendy, Γder MilitΓ£o, and Dani Carvajal. Additionally, VinΓcius was on the bench to start the game.
“[Vinicius] didn’t start because he hasn’t played a full 90 minutes since his injury,” Ancelotti explained. “We thought it best for him to play in the second half, which would likely be less intense. He performed well.”
Looking ahead, Madrid will face Pachuca on Wednesday in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
