Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Handed Touchline Ban for Chelsea’s Clash Against Aston Villa

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca will be forced to watch from the stands when his side welcomes Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge on December 27. The Italian tactician earned an automatic one-match touchline suspension after receiving his third yellow card of the season during the Blues' dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Saturday.

The decisive booking occurred around the hour mark when referee Andy Madley cautioned Enzo Maresca for his vocal protests on the touchline. The Chelsea boss was reportedly incensed by what he perceived as inconsistent officiating, later arguing that Newcastle players escaped punishment for fouls identical to those that saw his own players booked. Madley, however, deemed Maresca’s conduct "overzealous," triggering a suspension that adds another chapter to Chelsea's turbulent disciplinary narrative this term.

This latest sanction marks Maresca’s second touchline ban in just three months. He previously served a suspension in October after a high profile dismissal against Liverpool, where he received a red card for an exuberant celebration that saw him leave his technical area following a late winning goal by EstΓͺvΓ£o Willian Chelsea's new young star.

While Maresca has often defended his passion as "worth it," the recurring absence of the primary strategist from the dugout is becoming a logistical hurdle for the West London club.

Beyond the manager’s personal tally, Chelsea’s broader disciplinary record remains a significant concern for the Premier League hierarchy. The Newcastle fixture saw seven Chelsea representatives including Maresca enter the referee’s notebook. This collective lapse is expected to trigger an automatic FA fine of approximately £50,000, as it represents a repeat offense for the club having picked up more than six bookings in a single match earlier this season.

Assistant coach Willy Caballero is the most likely candidate to take the reins on the touchline for the Aston Villa clash. While Enzo Maresca will still be permitted to communicate with his staff and deliver pre-match and half-time team talks, his inability to make real-time tactical adjustments from the pitch level could be a factor in a game with massive implications for the top four race. Chelsea currently sit fourth in the table but have secured only one victory in their last five league outings.

Despite the coaching setback, there is positive news on the personnel front. Maresca confirmed in his post-match comments that key attackers Liam Delap and EstΓͺvΓ£o Willian are expected to be fit and available for the festive fixture against Villa. Their return provides a much needed boost to a squad that has struggled with both injury and suspension throughout the winter period, including recent absences of Moises Caicedo and Mykhailo Mudryk.

As the Blues prepare for the visit of Unai Emery’s side, the focus will inevitably shift to whether the team can maintain its composure under the bright lights of Stamford Bridge. For Maresca, the challenge will be managing a crucial game from a distance, while the club's board may soon have to address a disciplinary trend that is costing the team both financially and tactically.
