Discord Enhances Safety: Parents Can Now Track Teen Calls, Chats, and Spending

Discord has significantly enhanced its Family Center features, offering parents and guardians unprecedented visibility into their teenagers' activities on the platform. This expansion aims to foster a safer online environment by providing tools that encourage open dialogue between teens and their families about responsible digital engagement, all while striving to maintain the privacy and autonomy of younger users.

The Discord updated Family Center introduces a comprehensive activity dashboard that offers a detailed look at a teen's engagement over the past week. Parents can now view the total amount their teen has spent on the platform, including purchases from the Discord Shop and Nitro subscriptions in the application.

Additionally, the dashboard displays the total minutes spent on voice and video calls across direct messages, group chats, and servers. A ranked list of the top five users and servers with whom the teen has most frequently interacted is also provided, offering insights into their social circle and online communities.

Beyond activity summaries, Discord's latest updates include enhanced parental controls managed exclusively by guardians. These new settings allow parents to dictate who can send direct messages to their teen, offering options such as restricting messages to friends only or allowing messages from anyone within the same servers. Guardians can also manage how sensitive content is filtered, with options to blur, block, or leave content unfiltered. Furthermore, parents can control how Discord utilizes a teen's data, including personalized advertising.

In a move designed to empower teens while keeping parents informed, Discord has introduced a feature allowing teens to optionally notify their guardians when they file a report on another user. This notification system ensures teens can take action when they encounter objectionable content, without compromising the confidentiality of the report itself. Discord emphasizes that while parents gain more insight into their teen's activity, the actual content of messages remains private and inaccessible to guardians.

 

The Family Center operates on a voluntary, opt-in basis, requiring both the teen and the parent or guardian to link their accounts. This connection is initiated when a teen shares a QR code with their parent, who then scans it, followed by the teen approving the connection request. This process underscores Discord's commitment to respecting teen privacy and autonomy, ensuring that oversight is a collaborative effort rather than an imposed one.

Discord's proactive approach to enhancing safety features aligns with a broader industry trend, as major social plats like Meta, YouTube, and OpenAI have also been implementing more robust protections for younger users. These updates come amid increased scrutiny from regulators and government bodies, with initiatives like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) highlighting the growing demand for safer online spaces for minors. By expanding its Family Center, Discord aims to demonstrate its commitment to self regulation and the well-being of its young user base.

The platform also continues to reinforce its existing safety measures. Parents can utilize the "Privacy & Safety" settings within Discord to filter explicit content in direct messages, block unknown users, and enable two-factor authentication for account security. Encouraging teens to join smaller, private servers with trusted friends, rather than large, public ones, and teaching them to avoid clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information are also vital components of maintaining a secure online experience.
