Mbappe Misses Another Penalty as Real Madrid Fall to Athletic Club

Kylian Mbappe's penalty woes continued on Wednesday as Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Athletic Club. This follows his missed penalty in last week's 2-0 Champions League loss to Liverpool.

Despite the recent miss, manager Carlo Ancelotti entrusted Mbappe with another spot-kick against Athletic Club. However, the 25-year-old forward once again failed to convert, leaving Real Madrid trailing after Alejandro Remiro's 53rd minute opener.

Real Madrid's trip to San Mamés on Wednesday night ended in disappointment as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Athletic Club. The result was a culmination of a frustrating performance characterized by missed opportunities and defensive vulnerabilities.

From the outset, Athletic Club dictated the tempo, creating a series of dangerous chances that kept Thibaut Courtois busy in the Real Madrid goal. While Los Blancos struggled to find their rhythm, Kylian Mbappe came closest to breaking the deadlock with a deflected shot that found the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving Madrid's attacking threat muted.

The second half saw Athletic Club capitalize on their early dominance. In the 53rd minute, a dangerous ball from the hosts was parried by Courtois, only to fall directly at the feet of Alex Berenguer, who calmly slotted the ball into the empty net from close range.

Real Madrid were presented with a chance to equalize in the 73rd minute when they were awarded a penalty. However, Mbappe, who had missed a penalty in the previous week's Champions League match, failed to convert again. This time, reserve goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala guessed correctly and parried the Frenchman's shot away.

The missed penalty proved decisive as Real Madrid struggled to create clear-cut chances in the remaining minutes. The defeat leaves them four points behind league leaders Barcelona and highlights the need for improvement in both attack and defense if they are to challenge for the La Liga title.
