The Messi-Ronaldo Effect A Cause for the No.9 Drought: Harry Kane Blames Messi and Ronaldo for Lack of Traditional No. 9s

The scarcity of classic No. 9s in modern football has sparked debate, with Kane offering a compelling explanation. He suggests that the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has significantly shaped the evolution of the gama.

Messi, Kane and Ronaldo

Harry Kane, the prolific striker for Bayern Munich, has shared his insights on the diminishing presence of traditional No. 9s in contemporary football. He attributes this trend to the longstanding influence of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have dominated the sport for over a decade.

Kane notes that the remarkable achievements of Messi and Ronaldo, including a combined total of 13 Ballon d'Or awards, have shifted the focus of aspiring players towards wide attacking positions. He believes this has resulted in fewer players aiming to become classic center-forwards.

In his own words, Kane stated, "The game is changing. The way coaching is now means a lot of players grow up wanting to be wingers. Messi and Ronaldo dominated for so long playing off the wings, and I think a lot of players wanted to emulate them."

He also points out the rise of tactical formations featuring false nines and hybrid roles, which further contribute to the evolution of the striker position.

Despite acknowledging the challenges of scoring goals, Kane expresses a hope for the resurgence of traditional No. 9s in the future.

As he prepares for significant matches with Bayern Munich, including a Champions League showdown against PSG and Bundesliga clashes with Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, Kane's reflections highlight the ongoing transformation within the game.
